The Virgin Birth of Christ
The Virgin Birth of Christ
SECOND EDITION
J. Gresham Machen
According to a universal belief of the historic Christian church, Jesus of Nazareth was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. But does this belief rest on historical fact? Yes, says the author, whose career-long concern with this issue culminated in 1930 with the publication of The Virgin Birth of Christ.
Upon J. Gresham Machen's untimely death, Caspar Wistar Hodge characterized him as "the greatest theologian in the English-speaking world." The Virgin Birth of Christ has been described by C. Allyn Russell, writing in 1973, as a "classic,... the ablest treatment of that subject, from an orthodox stand- point, in the field of New Testament studies."
The author discusses first Luke's birth narrative (in chaps. 2-6), then Matthew's (7). Next, he discusses the relationship be- tween the two (8), their inherent credibility (9), and their rela- tionship to both secular history (10) and the rest of the New Testament (11). The final chapters deal with "alternative theories" concerning these narratives (12-14).
J. Gresham Machen (1881-1937), after teaching New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary for twenty-three years, founded Westminster Theological Seminary in 1929 and taught there until his death. The second edition of The Virgin Birth of Christ, which is here reprinted, appeared two years after the first. Machen considered this book his magnum opus. His other works include The Origin of Paul's Religion, Christianity and Liberalism, and New Testament Greek for Beginners.
